GroOops GROUPS

GroOops Groups #02

Our GroOops groups provide a safe and confidential space to explore issues and events that come up in our lives. It is often hard in our increasingly complex society for children, young people and their families to find a safe haven for reflection and sharing.

At GroOops we aim to help and support each person be they child, young person, parent, carer or family by providing a flexible and accessible service.

This may be through our groupwork sessions, art based emotional wellbeing support groups, 1:1 counselling or by supporting the family as a whole.

GroOops AIMS and OBJECTIVES

  • GroOops aims to help the child or young person and their families, in familiar and neutral venues, the chance to develop strategies to support problem solving, positive perceptions, self-esteem, self-confidence, self-awareness, emotional intelligence and personal development.

  • GroOops uses an integrative combination of psycho-dynamic, person-centered, systemic, Gestalt and CBT in our approach as well as dance, drama and art based strategies. This takes place in workshops within a focused programme, usually over ten weeks, in a variety of settings in schools, colleges, organisations, evenings and week-ends.

  • As with all interventions healing can occur through experiencing the integration of thoughts and feelings. Our aim is to assist our clients to move towards a sense of wholeness and sense of purpose. The GroOops model aims to assist in the development of essential tools which can support healthy emotional and psychological wellbeing as well as relationship and group skills aiding social inclusion.

  • After the ending of a group GroOops can offer 1:1 counselling to further support our clients on their journey where necessary.

A typical EXAMPLE of a mid-point GroOops Group Process.

  • On arrival participants would find the room arranged for both artwork and a large enough space for physical expression.

  • They would be greeted by facilitators (normally up to 4 facilitators to 8 participants dependent on the needs of the group).

  • Check in time – wherein everyone brings their current issues, concerns and ‘touch base’ with each other which develops connection and re-bonding between the participants.

  • Ground rules reaffirmed. Confidentiality essential.

  • Issues from this sharing can be further explored through the group process.

  • To further assist connectivity we would then participate in a quick icebreaker introduction game.

  • Each group will have developed its own activity e.g. lighting a candle to commemorate someone lost or writing in a journal etc. dependent on the groups expression of need as established in the first session.

  • The content that follows could take many forms. Examples would be dramatising or utilising dance to expand on an issue brought in ‘check-in’ to help the participants to understand the meaning; using art to enable expression of feelings through colour and texture; family tree work; group discussion; role play of family and relationship situations; physical sculpture work. The content is flexible and responsive to the group participants’ need.

  • Next would be our ‘check-out’ where we would be revisiting the content of the session and reconfirming the GroOops rules of confidentiality.

  • We would also reconfirm the availability of the school counsellor (or other designated person) to hold unresolved feelings in between the sessions should it be necessary.

  • On completion of the check out, which is visual and displayed for all participants to see and be able to comment on....................

  • ........The session then ends.

WHAT ORGANISATIONS SAY OF OUR WORK.

"I have found the structure of the organisation to be exemplary, the outcomes of their work excellent and the level of good practice enviable."
    CAMHS

"What we liked about the service was how you engage with young people, through groupwork, workshops, expressive arts, allowing young people in their own way to express their emotions, when even words are too hard to say or telling a professional just labels them. Students have been more settled in school and have seemed happier. Most are able to engage with school more appropriately"
    LONDON ACADEMY

"I am happy to endorse GroOops, the level of professionalism and the care and concern to create an innovative and pro-active model that supports the mental health and emotional wellbeing of children, young people and their families addressing life transitions."
    CAMHS

"GroOops has been a fantastic agency to work with. Young students participating in the programme have shown high commitments and strong satisfaction. They have experienced through the workshops a strong sense of belonging and an improved self confidence and self esteem. We are convinced that GroOops is exactly what is required in our school to aid our pupils as they become young adults. The students that GroOops works with are those known to the school to be at great risk of exclusion, have behavioural difficulties and come from extremely deprived backgrounds. GroOops has proven to Bishop Douglass that they can work with the most demanding of personalities and we can only recommend the organisation to the highest level"
    BISHOP DOUGLASS SCHOOL

"It was extremely helpful to be able to refer teenagers who have emotional difficulties to GroOops. It aided and enhanced the individual therapeutic work that the adolescents were engaged in with CAMHS and was especially beneficial for teenagers who have difficulties with anxiety in social situations and social isolation. Other less therapeutic groups were too much of a challenge for these teenagers and without GroOops they would not have had the opportunity to increase their social interactions and be able to have the support of their peers while exploring their emotional well-being."
    CAMHS

"The services that have been provided to our school in helping students dealing with aspects of loss has been of an outstanding standard. These students would have had NO outlet for their grief and dealing with their life situations which have been very harsh on people so young. Because of the sessions that GroOops put on, each student is able to express their feelings, most of which, have been hidden for some time, in a safe, caring environment which will enhance their futures in only the most positive of ways".
    SECONDARY SCHOOL COUNSELLOR

"All students told school staff that they appreciated the workshops. They developed greater empathy towards each other as well as greater awareness and understanding of their own feelings and experiences. The ongoing workshops have enabled very vulnerable young people to understand and come to terms with past experiences and feelings and face the future with greater confidence and self-awareness."
    WHITEFIELD SCHOOL

"Thank you so much for the help and support you have given both to the school and the students. GroOops is an invaluable and necessary organisation for our students. It is so important to have an easily accessible agency like yours that you can refer students to and feel confident they will receive the help and support they so desperately need."
    CHRIST'S COLLEGE

"Having access to GroOops has been of benefit to a number of the young people we support and provides them with the support they require through a less formal setting."
    YOUTH OFFENDING SERVICE

"We have had the pleasure of welcoming GroOops to work with our pupils on several occasions. All engaged and participated well and reported many benefits from being in the GroOops. We thoroughly endorse GroOops ethos."
    RAVENSCROFT SCHOOL

"It's brilliant to have a non-stigmatised service available that incorporates the arts. The service you provide is not only reflective and practical but also gives young people a chance to learn through experience."
    ENABLE

"We are happy to endorse the development of GroOops as an organisation and have made positive referrals."
    IPOP

GroOops have been contributing to the parenting training and leading on the 7+ and teenage group activities with very positive outcomes. So much so that those we thought would be hard to engage readily return and are fully involved with the project. Parents have happily engaged with the counselling provision where previous services have failed to”.
    BARNET THINK FAMILY PROJECT

“I am impressed by the professional and thorough approach to this groupwork process. Inevitably this level of professional expertise is hugely beneficial to the young people attending the group. This is born out by the numbers of young people who continue to enthusiastically attend. This is clearly a pleasurable learning experience for these young people and undoubtedly therapeutic”.
    331 YOUNG PEOPLE’S COUNSELLING SERVICE

KIDS TAKE KONTROL - "A brilliant, caring, dance-dedicated, energy filled, gigantic, happy, kind, loving, magnificent, no-nonsense, open-to-all, professional, quite remarkable, show-biz, triumphant, unique, VERY EXCELLENT, YELL-OUT-LOUD, SUCCESS. Here we have an evening of whoops and cheers, twists, turns, leaps and jumps, dives and tumbles, cartwheels and hip-hop thrusts. Aged from 6 to mid twenties this youth show excelled. Never work with children or animals is the saying but these "KIDZ" would be a joy to work with. I never knew hip-hop could so diverse, varied and at times utterly emotional. A HUGE screen showed images and text from the "KIDZ" themselves and it is clear that this charity, GroOops, is held dear in everyone's heart.

Everything was great but LOST IN TRANSLATION, SPIRIT, UNITY, UNDER 18's - AGAINST KNIFE CRIME, BIRDGANG and FRESHNESS all left their mark. This show would look very much at home at Sadler’s Wells. Clean, clear dancing and so many smiles both on stage and off. Star of the show was Malachi a six year gutsy, full of confidence, dancer who stopped the show. In youth speak this show was “sick” - superbly so (as in very, very good). It made me proud seeing everyone fully engaged. Director Zoë-Ann Aston should be well pleased - we were. WHASSUP? This show must go on and be seen again.”
